Tehran, YJC. Vice President of the Reform Front has said that although Khatami enjoys more popularity, Hashemi has greater experience.
Mohammad Javad Haghshenas, member of the Reform Front
Central Council believed that more than caring to run for the elections,
Hashemi Rafsanjani prefers to leave the stage for others.
Regarding Hashemi, Haghshenas said "In meetings he has
recommended individuals to try as they can to convince Khatami to run for the
elections.”
He also made a comparison between the two as "Khatami enjoys
more votes than Hashemi both among the general public and the socio-cultural
elite. Also his 8-year presence in the domestic administrational arena and on the
international stage has increased his acceptance and sensibleness.”
By contrast, he also added remarks on Hashemi, saying "Mr.
Hashemi enjoys stronger and more extensive relations with the Conservatives and
Principalists and holds a better standing among the technocrat.”
"Based on polls largely carried out by Reformist
organizations, among all who have announced candidacy or who are considered as
potential candidates Khatami has the better place,” Vice President of the Reform Front added.
He believed that considering current domestic crises,
Khatami could materialize the political breakthrough mentioned by the Supreme
Leader, creating a landslide like his first electoral win.
Haghshenas pointed to requests by Reformist entities as well
as mild Principalists like Motahari of Khatami to run for elections and said "Not
responding to the requests shows a kind of presentiment from the side of
Khatami whose reasons are not mentioned. But it seems that before attending to
demands by the Reformist, he has greater concerns that include national
interests as well as interpretations made of his candidacy.”
He finally added "There are extremist orientations
being formed by some radical currents regarding the elections and optimal
participation. They would like to hamper the elections and since they regard
Khatami as a factor to successful elections they harshly oppose him.”
