TEHRAN,Young Journalists Club(YJC) -Most American voters think President Donald Trump is a racist person and life conditions for minorities have taken a turn for the worse under his presidency, a new poll has found.
The survey by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, which was released on Thursday, found that 57 percent of Americans – including more than 8 in 10 blacks, three-quarters of Hispanics and nearly half of whites— thought Trump was racially-biased.
Of all respondents, 57 percent thought Trump's policies have been bad for Muslims while 56 percent said the same for Hispanics.
For African Americans the figure dropped to 47 percent, including three-quarter of blacks.
The poll also found that over 9 in 10 African Americans disapproved of the way Trump has been handling presidency and 9 in 10 thought he was leading the country in the wrong direction.
In contrast, 45 percent of white participants approve of Trump’s work, while 35 percent of them thought the direction of the country was improving.
About half of all Americans, including two-thirds of African Americans, said they thought race relations in had worsened over the past year.
Trump’s racial views were overwhelmingly unpopular among Democrats, where 85 percent of participants in the survey considered him racist. Republicans thought highly of Trump in this regard as only 21 percent of them thought.
The results showed the severe divide on racial issues that have taken the American society by the grip during the presidency of Trump, whose 2016 presidential campaign was marked by divisive comments about race and religion.
Trump did not stop his vitriolic comments after presidency and stirred further outage by banning Muslims from entering the US, refusing to single out white nationalist after a violent rally, calling African nations "shithole" countries and promising to build a wall on the Mexican border to curb illegal immigration.
This is while, when reporters asked Trump earlier this year whether he thought he was racist, Trump replied, "No, no. I am not a racist" and added, "I am the least racist person you have ever interviewed. That I can tell you."
