TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -American father and son in the state of Rhode Island who disagree on President Donald Trump policies have entered an electoral race against each other for a state House seat.
Forty-seven-year-old David Quiroa Sr. is running as a Republican against his 22-year-old son, David Quiroa Jr., who is running as an independent for the local legislative in a bid to unseat the state’s Democratic lawmaker Marvin Abney, AP reported Saturday.
Both father and son filed for the House seat earlier in the week, using the same address in the city of Newport, the report added, noting that they also arrived at the City Hall together to file their candidacy documentations.
“What better way to argue with my father than on the political level?” said the younger Quiroa, adding: “He definitely is a very good motivator. Even if it’s to motivate to stop him.”
“We definitely had a lot of surprised faces,” he further underlined as quoted in the report. “Everyone was smiling and laughing and saying ‘Oh, that’s so funny.’ They were all flabbergasted.”
Quiroa Jr. also pointed out that it remains unclear who his mother, Iris Quiroa, will vote for, joking that “she could surprise us all and vote for Abney.”
The pair further explained to the AP that they often discuss politics, insisting that the electoral campaign will be “interesting” despite their political differences.
According to the report, Quiroa Sr., who insisted that he and his wife are “all the way for Trump,” ran for the same seat 14 years ago but was defeated.
This is while the state of Rhode Island is mainly a Democratic state and voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 US presidential election.
