TEHRAN, November 15 - Iran’s hand-woven carpet exports totaled $153 million over the first 6 months of Iranian calendar year (started on March 20, 2017), rising by 13 percent comparing to similar period in the year before, said Director of Iran’s National Carpet Center Hamid Kargar.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -Iran’s hand-woven carpet exports reached respectively $359 million and $300 million dollars in similar period last year and two years ago.
Iran is exporting hand-woven carpets to 80 countries, including Germany, Italy, Lebanon, Kuwait, Qatar, Japan and China. The product is playing a strategic role in international markets.
Iran is the leading exporter of hand-woven carpets. Persian rugs are highly sought out for their intricate design and skilled craftsmanship.
Carpet-weaving is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished manifestations of the Persian culture and art, and dates back to ancient Persia, FNA reported.
There is an estimated population of 1.2mln weavers in Iran producing carpets for domestic markets and international export.
The country produces about 5mln square meters of carpets annually of which 80 percent are sold in international markets.
