TEHRAN, August 25 - Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says he has no doubts that the Iranian nation would be victorious in face of enemies’ plots the latest instance of which he said were US sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Rouhani emphasized that Iranians needed to stand in unity against conspiracies hatched by the enemies like Israel and the US, adding that this was a path already shown to the nation by the late Founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini.
"Today is one of the difficult and hard days for Iran against foreign conspiracies, but the path of the late Imam can save the people and the country," Rouhani said on Saturday on the occasion of the beginning of Iran's Government Week.
He made the remarks during a visit to Imam Khomeini’s Mausoleum in southern Tehran, where he renewed his allegiance to the ideals of the late founder of the Islamic Republic.
Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order, re-imposing a first round of sanctions on Iran which target the country's purchase of US dollars, trade in gold and other precious metals as well as automotive sector.
The sanctions came three months after Trump withdrew Washington from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran despite objections from the other parties to the agreement – France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China – and the international community.
In November, a second round of US sanctions will be reinstated on Iran's oil industry, the Central Bank, port operators, and the energy and shipping sectors.
Iranian officials have said the US measures equal an “economic war” on the country.
Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in July that the Islamic Republic had lodged a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over what he described as Washington's "unlawful" move to re-impose "unilateral" sanctions against Tehran.
Based on Iran's lawsuit, the US sanctions violate the Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations signed by the two countries in 1955.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is reportedly preparing to begin hearing Iran’s legal challenge against renewed US bans next Monday.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Iran's president emphasized that his administration would try all in its capacity to reduce the impacts of sanctions on the lives of Iranians.
"We are aware of the people's pain, suffering and problems and do our best to reduce them. There is no doubt about the nation's final victory over the enemy," Rouhani said.
Through unity and solidarity, he added, the nation "was able to foil the Zionist lobbies' efforts in the US Senate and the House of Representatives as well as the US conspiracies in the UN Security Council."
"Resistance against conspiracies is the duty of all of us and we can overcome these problems through unity and solidarity," the Iranian president said.
He also called on government officials to explain their efforts and achievements to the people during the Government Week.
