TEHRAN, June 29, YJC - Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi warned against the repercussions of any unilateral move by the US in Syria under the pretext of a “potential” chemical attack, saying the possible military action would only give assistance to terrorists.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - In remarks released on Wednesday, Qassemi dismissed Washington’s recent claims on the Syrian government’s preparations for another chemical attack as “baseless”.
He made the remarks in response to the White House’s statement that the US has “identified potential preparations” by the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad for another chemical attack.
“As the Syrian government has been fighting against terrorist groups for more than six years…, raising such baseless claims and taking actions that would do nothing but to strengthen the position of terrorist groups and complex combating them is very questionable and suspicious,” Qassemi noted.
He further called on the international community and relevant organizations to use all their power to prevent the US from taking any military action that would boost insecurity and instability in the region.
In an ominous statement issued with no supporting evidence or further explanation, Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Monday night said the US had "identified potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime that would likely result in the mass murder of civilians, including innocent children."
The announcement comes amid rising tensions in Syria between the US-led coalition and Russia, which is backing the Syrian government.
Earlier in April, the US attacked Syria with 59 Tomahawk missiles after Washington’s claims on a suspected chemical attack in the rebel-held Idlib province.
