Iran's ambassador to the UN has said if NAM could be strengthened during Iran's chairmanship the results will demonstrate the country's leadership in International forum.
Iran ambassador to the UN Mohammad Khazaei has held office in New York since 2007. In a visit to Mehr News Agency, Khazaei provided comments on the Islamic Republic of Iran's chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement and said "Iran's chairmanship of the NAM is a very important and it is a historic occasion whose recognition and application is likely to have great achievements for the country.”
Khazaei considered as one of Iran's missions during its chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement improving the effectiveness of NAM in the international arena.
"What is a very sensitive point and needs thorough consideration is the point I mentioned. During the past few months and especially when the summit was held in Tehran I have to say it was more than we imagined.” Khazaei added, " Meetings were held and decisions were made in a very satisfactory fashion. Of course we had held talks about the decisions back in New York and they were ready to be passed. There had remained a couple of decisions which were discussed in Tehran.”
Khazaei then provided comments on the mission of NAM and said "Basically NAM is a movement and not an organization. It is a movement with a goal that was launched by some countries that were really non-aligned, non-aligned in the sense of not belonging to any blocs that existed at the time.”
Iran Ambassador to the UN considered as important the effectiveness of the NAM on the global stage and said that it must be made clear what the movement can say about current international issues.
Khazaei further said "In the past four months of Iran's chairmanship of the NAM we have passed 19 resolutions.”
"In discussions we have had we have shown that we are able to deliver our viewpoints despite obstacles. This is not an easy job to do and the decision making process follows a consensus of 120 countries,” he stated.
Khazaei considered Iran's position as influencing many issues, saying that the applied impacts are subject to many factors of which talks must be held.
