US President Donald Trump’s conduct over the past weeks raises "the question of impeachment,” said Representative Keith Ellision, a leading candidate in the race to lead the Democratic Party.
Time to discuss Trump’s impeachment: Democrat
During a CNN debate with seven other candidates to lead the Democratic Party, Ellison said Wednesday night that impeachment "investigations" had to begin for Trump.

"I think that Donald Trump has already done a number of things which legitimately raise the question of impeachment," the Minnesota lawmaker said.

"We need to begin investigations not to go after Donald Trump but protect the presidency of the United States to make sure nobody can monetize the presidency and make profit off it for his own game," he added.

According to Ellison and other Trump critics, Trump has already breached the Constitution's Emoluments Clause, which bars presidents from taking money from foreign states.

They argue that Trump’s ownership of a hotel in Washington, DC, which has been frequented by many foreign guests, amounts to a breach of that law.

A billionaire real estate magnate, Trump has been under pressure to prove that his business interests would not interfere with his new job as America’s 45th president.

The former reality TV star has announced that he would hand over his businesses "in total” to his adult children, who are close advisers to him.

Trump has also been accused of violating US laws by introducing immigration policies that are discriminatory towards Muslims and Latin Americans.

Ellison claimed that the impeachment discussion would not be a move against Trump. Rather, it would be an attempt to protect the "integrity” of the presidency.

"We need to begin investigations not to go after Donald Trump but protect the presidency of the United States to make sure nobody can monetize the presidency and make profit off it for his own game,” he said.
