Iranian Fisheries Organization and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop cooperation in genetic improvement of rainbow trout.
Iran ranks first in the world in terms of producing rainbow trout in sweet waters, producing 14.000 of this fish, said Head of Iranian Fisheries Organization Hassan Salehi in the ceremony of signing the MoU.
He added that FAO allocated $330.000 for genetic correction and improvement of trout in Iran.
70 percent of Iranian eyed egg trout need is met via imports, he said, adding implementing the plan would help Iran get access to the know-how.
Iran needs 400-500 million eyed eggs trout annually, Salehi continued.
The time-frame of genetic improvement of rainbow trout project in Iran has been set for two years.
Serge R. Nakouzi, FAO Representative to Iran, for his part, said FAO aims to implement joint projects with Iran through sharing know-how for farming top kinds of fish.
He added FAO is after improving Iran’s scientific and technical potential for genetic improvement of trout in a bid to help its production and distribution.
