Iran categorically condemned the United Nations General Assembly resolution on human rights situation in the country.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran blasts adoption of such resolutions which are approved in an unrealistic manner against the Islamic Republic of Iran, based on dual-track standards of western states and a politically-tainted and biased approach,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi.
He further noted that Iran slams the instrumental use of human rights by western states against independent countries.
"The country (Iran) firmly believes that such approaches will result in nothing but lack of confidence of public opinion to international human rights mechanisms,” Qassemi continued.
By a vote of 85 to 35 with 63 abstentions, the United Nations General Assembly on Monday approved a resolution criticizing Iran’s human rights record.
Canada was the main sponsor of the resolution, with the United States and the European Union being co-sponsors.
