Tehran, YJC. Qalibaf has said that the Tehran Municipality is devising plans to reduce air pollution in the Iranian capital by 50 percent in the course of 4 years.
Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf speaking on Monday at a
ceremony to inaugurate 2 new subway stations for the city, urged joint effort
by all related organizations to fight air pollution.
He further noted that the improvement of the public transportation
system is a major policy to fight air pollution, adding that the Tehran Municipality
is planning to dig 30 kilometers subway tunnels every year which, according to
him, will be an international record.
He added that plans are made to turn 20 kilometers of subway
transportation operational every year.
However, pollution in the megacity is not limited to the
air. Other forms of pollution such as water, visual, and sound pollutions have
also made life difficult in Tehran.
The impact of the pollution is not aimed at humans only, but
animals and birds as well. Many bird species have said to have left the city
due to pollution.
Also, it is said that the city’s biological potential to
support life was run out over 10 years ago.
