Tehran, YJC. A representative of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Iran has hailed the Islamic Republic for having hosted the largest refugee population in the world during the past 3 decades.
"The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has
effectively implemented its undertakings in coordinating humanitarian
contributions in various emergency cases,” stated Sivanka Dhanapala on Thrusday
in a message to the 1st International Crisis Management Conference in Favor of
Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Orumiyeh.
"The international body (UNHCR) … always supports and
appreciates Islamic Republic of Iran’s measures in emergency cases,” he
emphasized, adding that Iran enjoys considerable experiences in different sorts
of emergency conditions.
The UN representative further praised Iran for its advanced
emergency planning system, and asserted that Tehran can share its experiences with
humanitarian agencies so that they may help governments in emergency cases.
The Iranian Ministry of Interior and the UNHCR cosponsored the
1st International Crisis Management Conference in Favor of Refugees and Asylum
Seekers.
Iran is one of the record-holders internationally in hosting
refugees, having hosted millions of them so far from neighboring countries for
more than three decades.
Of the refugees the country has accepted, only 860,000 are
registered.
