Iranian FM demands action to release Bahrain Shia leader

Tehran, YJC. Zarif on Wednesday called on his regional counterparts to find a way for the release of Bahraini opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad made the request in telephone conversations with some of the regional officials.

He called on the regional foreign ministers to explore revenues for the release of the Bahraini political figure as soon as possible.

The top Iranian diplomat urged them to work within the framework of their collective responsibility in support of political moderation and peaceful movements.

The foreign ministers talking to Zarif highlighted the necessity of using dialogue and peaceful methods to resolve political disagreements. The also promised that they would put in to action every effort to help settle the issue of the prominent Bahraini cleric’s arrest.

Salman, who is the secretary general of Bahrain’s al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, was detained on Sunday after he underwent 10 hours of interrogation by the Bahrain’s criminal police.

The Bahraini prosecutor has charged Nayef Mahmud with atempting regime change by force, threats, and illegal means as well as insulting the Interior Ministry publicly.


The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, the European Union , as well as a host of other international organizations have dondemned the government in Manama for its harsh act in detaining the Shia dissent cleric.
