Tehran, YJC. A funeral procession was held for General Hamid Taqavi, a senior IRGC commander who was killed in the Iraqi city of Samarrah, was held in Tehran on Monday morning.
Taqavi was killed during an advisory mission against Islamic
State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist groups.
Once a military commander during the 8-year Iraqi-Iran in
the 1980s, Taqavi lost his life while on and advisory mission, the the Islamic
Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Public Relations Department announced yesterday.
The statement added that the top ranking IRGC officer was
killed in the vicinity of a Shia shrine in the city of Samarrah.
Samarrah, which is situated 110 km to the north of capital
Baghdad, is the site of the holy shrines of two Shia Imams.
It is further explained that body will be transferred to and buried in
Ahvaz, his hometown, in southwestern Iran on Tuesday.
Tehran has repeatedly pointed out that it will not mediate with military
affairs in Iraq or Syria, but rather would continue to provide support to the
two countries against ISIL in the form of defense consultation and humanitarian
aid.
