Tehran, YJC. Iran has said that the recent major US policy shift to revive diplomatic relations with Cuba lays waste Washington’s decades-old strategy of sanctions and isolation.

Marzieh Afkham, Spokeswoman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said on Saturday in Tehran that Cuba’s resistance over the past half century since the country’s revolution has "proved that the policy of isolation and sanctions which the domineering powers adopt against the will and resistance of independent countries and states is fruitless and ineffective.”

Providing comments on the US acknowledgement that isolating Cuba had been ineffective, Afkham said the recent development around Washington-Havana relations could be a step forward in decreasing tensions in the Americas.

In a radical shift in policy, US President Barack Obama rejected US policy toward Cuba as outdated and unfruitful and announced that Washington and Havana would work towards restoring diplomatic relations more than 54 years after they were broken.

"I do not believe we can continue doing the same thing for over five decades and expect a different result," Obama said during remarks at the White House on Wednesday, adding, "Isolation has not worked."
