Friday, 3 June 2022 (YJC)_ During a meeting with the UN Assistant Secretary-General, the Russian Deputy Defense Minister said that Ukrainian grain ships could leave the Black Sea ports through humanitarian crossings.
UN Assistant Secretary-General Martin Griffiths has arrived in Russia to discuss the global food crisis, especially grain.
According to the Tass news agency, Griffiths met with Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin on Thursday, and "the situation in Ukraine was discussed."
Foumin said about this meeting:
The mechanism of interaction between the Ministry of Defense [Russia] and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is working successfully.
The Russian official added:
Separately, the issue of grain exports from the territory of Ukraine was discussed.
During the meeting, the Russian side stressed that the global food crisis originates primarily from US and other Western sanctions against Russia because these sanctions have disrupted supply chains.
Russia's deputy defense minister told the UN envoy that ships carrying grain could leave Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea through "humanitarian crossings" and that Moscow would ensure their safety, Interfax reported.
Amin Awad, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Coordinator for Ukraine, said in a statement:
This war will not win. What we are witnessing after a hundred days is the loss of human lives, homes, jobs and landscapes.
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin called French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Schultz.
Moscow is ready to resume exports of fertilizers and agricultural products if sanctions against Russia are lifted.
The Russian president also added:
His country is ready to find ways to supply grain, one of which could be through Black Sea ports.
