Thursday, 2 June 2022 (YJC)_ At the official request of the Turkish government, the United Nations changed the spelling and pronunciation of the country's name.
The United Nations announced on Wednesday (June 1st) that it had replaced the previous name after Ankara requested that it use the name Türkiye instead of Turkey. The new name is now used in foreign languages for Turkey.
In an interview with Anatoly, UN spokesman Stefan Dozaric said they had received a letter from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoglu to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres requesting that the country be renamed immediately. The letter was executed.
Çavuşglu announced on Tuesday that the letter was officially sent to the United Nations and other international organizations. He said:
Together with our communications department, we have been successful in preparing the ground for this. We have made it possible for the United Nations and other international organizations and countries to witness this change.
