Thursday, 26 May 2022 (YJC)_ U.S. diplomats say the UN Security Council will hold a meeting in the coming days to tighten sanctions on North Korea over recent missile tests.
North Korea's new missile tests in 2022 prompted the United States to call for an emergency Security Council meeting to address the concerns of its East Asian allies.
A US official said Thursday morning that the UN Security Council would vote in the coming days on tightening sanctions against North Korea over the launch of ballistic missiles.
According to Reuters, the meeting and the vote will be held under US pressure, but China and Russia have expressed opposition to tightening sanctions on North Korea.
The US official explained:
The draft [new resolution] limits North Korea's ability to advance its ballistic missile and weapons of mass destruction programs, simplifies sanctions, and facilitates the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need.
The draft text seen by Reuters includes the extension of the ban on launching ballistic missiles for cruise missiles or "any other missile capable of carrying a nuclear weapon."
