Wednesday, 25 May 2022 (YJC)_ Iran's ambassador and deputy permanent representative to the United Nations called "Shirin Abu Aqla" another victim of the international community's inaction against the Zionist regime's ongoing war crimes and terrorism against the Palestinian people.

Representative of Iran: Zahra Ershadi, Ambassador and Deputy Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, addressed a Security Council meeting on "Aria Formula" on supporting journalists in armed conflict.

Referring to the martyrdom of "Shirin Abu Aqla", a reporter for Al-Jazeera, by the Zionist regime, she said:
These days, we are witnessing another heinous crime by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people. Veteran Palestinian journalist Shirin Abu Aqla was cold-bloodedly martyred by the occupying forces in Jenin in occupied Palestine. He was a brave voice for his people and a national symbol of truth and resilience against the oppressive occupation and injustice that the Palestinian people have endured for so long.

The representative of our country emphasized in this meeting:
The assassination of Shirin Abu Aqla by the Zionist regime is part of a protracted war and harassment, intimidation and violence against journalists aimed at covering up the Israeli regime's crimes against the Palestinians, which are in grave violation of international law and norms.

The Iranian representative noted:
Shirin Abu Aqla is also another victim of the international community's inaction in the face of Israeli war crimes and ongoing terrorism against the Palestinian people.

She further added:
We call on the United Nations, in particular the Security Council, to take immediate action to end the Israeli regime's aggression and impunity, to ensure the protection of the Palestinian people, and to take action to hold the regime accountable for the greatest international crimes committed worldwide. .

Zahra Ershadi stressed the importance of supporting civilians, including journalists, media professionals and related personnel in protecting civilians in armed conflict, and said:
All parties to the armed conflict must fully comply with their obligations under international law to protect civilians in armed conflict, including journalists.

Iran's representative to the UN added:
Unfortunately, the escalation of violence, intimidation, harassment of journalists in armed conflicts in many parts of the world, especially deliberate attacks that violate international humanitarian law, has reached its peak. Meanwhile, impunity for war crimes committed against journalists in armed conflict poses a serious threat to their security and protection. In this regard, we emphasize the need to strengthen UN action to protect journalists and ensure accountability for crimes committed against them in the context of armed conflict.

In the end, our ambassador said:
We reaffirm our firm position that human rights issues, including the protection of journalists, are the responsibility of the General Assembly and other relevant UN bodies, and that the Security Council should address this issue only if it is directly relevant to the maintenance of international peace and security.
