Japanese PM: Biden backs Japan's seat on Security Council

Monday, 23 May 2022 (YJC)_ Referring to Washington's support for Tokyo security, the Japanese prime minister said in a press conference with the US president that the world was facing a crisis over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which threatened international order.

"During a joint news conference with US President Joe Biden, who visited Tokyo, Kishida said:
Biden told me that he supports Japan's seat on the UN Security Council.

According to Reuters, he explained his talks with the US President:
Biden reiterated his commitment to defending Japan and that mutual deterrence would continue.

The Prime Minister of Japan added:
We emphasize the need to strengthen the Japanese-American alliance on deterrence. We oppose any attempt to change the situation in the China Sea by force.

Accordingly, Kishida also stated about the war in Ukraine:
We are facing a crisis over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which threatens the order and rules of the international community.

While the Japanese people are protesting against the large presence of American troops in their country, the Prime Minister of Japan announced at this press conference that the presence of American troops in his country will increase.

According to Reuters, he explained:
We agreed to increase military cooperation between Japan and the United States. We stressed the need to strengthen the partnership between Tokyo and Washington to increase Japan's defense capabilities.

Kishida also spoke about the recent tensions over the Taiwan issue in East Asia:
We have a common position on Taiwan and we support stability there. We will monitor Chinese military exercises.
