The survey, conducted May 18-20 among a sample of 2,041 adults across the United States, also found that 74 percent of Americans said things were "going badly" in the United States.

According to the report, the factors that have aroused the most pessimistic sentiment among Americans include the cost of living (77%), the stock market (68%) and the state of the national economy (67%).
