Friday, 20 May 2022 (YJC)_ "We support the efforts and leadership of the United Nations in addressing food insecurity issues, and we are ready to assist in these efforts," said Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Majid Takht-e Ravanchi, Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, said at a high-level meeting of the Security Council on food security and hostilities on Thursday, local time:
Food insecurity, climate change, the Kuwait 19 epidemic and the negative effects of various international conflicts have all affected many countries, including Iran, which has suffered from US sanctions for more than four decades.
He clarified:
In addition, hosting several million refugees from Afghanistan has put pressure on Iran's economy, including food supply.
The senior diplomat of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations stressed that the United Nations, the international community and international donors are obliged to fulfill their obligations and provide the necessary technical and financial assistance to foreign nationals residing in Iran.
Iran's ambassador to the UN stressed at the Security Council meeting that food insecurity and conflict are inextricably linked, and that conflict is a major cause of food insecurity.
Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations added:
Disruption of the supply chain, displacement of people, increasing pressure on natural and economic resources, and declining resilience of the affected population and food system are all long-term effects of conflict.
Referring to the 2022 World Food Crisis Report, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations said:
Global levels of hunger continue to rise at an alarming rate, and acute food insecurity has increased significantly over the past six years.
Referring to global statistics, he said:
In 2021, nearly 193 million people in 53 countries were severely food insecure and in urgent need of assistance. This includes nearly 40 million people in 36 countries who were in a state of emergency or worse.
The psychiatrist stated:
According to the same reports, conflicts continue to be a major cause of food insecurity for 139 million people in 24 countries who will face a crisis or worsening situation in 2021. These figures show the deteriorating humanitarian situation around the world.
The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations stated:
The whole world is affected by food shortages, however, there is no doubt that Africa suffers from severe food insecurity.
Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations referred to the situation of countries in the region involved in the food crisis, including Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria and Palestine, and said:
In Afghanistan, 22 million people suffer from food insecurity and are in dire need of help.
The psychiatrist stated:
Iran cooperates with international organizations to address the specific food security situation in Afghanistan. In the current challenging situation, the international community is expected to help the Afghan people overcome their problems.
The senior diplomat of the Islamic Republic of Iran continued:
In early 2022, acute food insecurity in Yemen worsened by an 8% increase in the number of people in crisis compared to early 2021.
The Iranian ambassador to the UN emphasized:
The humanitarian situation in Palestine is just as important as it has been exacerbated by decades of Israeli occupation and apartheid policies. The illegal siege of Gaza, which severely restricts the Palestinian people's right to food, must be lifted as soon as possible.
Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations also said about Syria:
Continued occupation, terrorism, and unilateral sanctions have displaced millions of people in the country, destroyed people's livelihoods, disrupted trade and food and agricultural supplies, damaged infrastructure, and restricted access to vital resources.
Takht-e Ravanchi recalled the effects of sanctions on food insecurity, saying unilateral coercive actions violated basic human rights, including the right to food, and led to food insecurity.
The senior diplomat of the Islamic Republic of Iran stated:
Unfortunately, some countries continue to use these illegal acts, which are prohibited under international humanitarian law, as a weapon to starve the population of the countries under sanctions.
Iran's ambassador to the United Nations added:
We believe that food supply processes and the food chain should not be disrupted in any way, even in times of armed conflict. In this regard, full adherence to international law, especially the 1949 Geneva Convention, is essential.
Ravanchi bed added:
In addition, UN sanctions should not be imposed in a way that endangers global food security.
He clarified:
All parties to the conflict must respect and protect the medical and humanitarian staff, and the principles of humanity, impartiality and independence must be observed when providing humanitarian assistance.
Iran's representative to the United Nations stressed:
We support the efforts and leadership of the United Nations in addressing food insecurity issues and are ready to assist in these efforts.
