Wednesday, 18 May 2022 (YJC)_ The former secretary general of the NATO alliance and the former Swedish prime minister have written an article calling on the US government to find a way to return to the nuclear deal.
Javier Solana, a prominent European politician who has previously served as Secretary General of the NATO Alliance, High Representative for the Common Security and Foreign Policy of the European Union and Secretary General of the Council of the European Union, co-authored with former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt in the Washington Post They have stressed the need for the United States to return to the JCPOA.
In this article, Solana and Bildt warn that tensions with Tehran will increase if the United States and Western countries fail to return the JCPOA to its original course.
The authors of the article, referring to the approval of a bill on Iran in the Senate, wrote that in this resolution, the senators asked the government to reach an agreement with Iran, which also covers non-nuclear issues. They see such a proposal as a factor that will almost certainly lead to the failure of the agreement.
The authors note:
At the same time, in Tehran, the appetite for a deal is waning as President Ebrahim Raisi brags about doubling Iranian oil sales since taking office last August, despite sanctions.
The two former European officials went on to discuss the dispute over the removal of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from the State Department's so-called terrorist organizations, and called on Washington and Tehran not to allow the issue to be blocked.
Solana and Bild also noted the Biden administration's conservative approach and its efforts to slow talks with Iran ahead of the November congressional by-elections.
They write:
Surprisingly, Biden maneuvered to return to the nuclear deal and promised that "America is back" is now slowly pursuing diplomacy that is strongly supported by US allies. It is a well-known saying that he is cautious about Iran in the run-up to the midterm congressional elections.
They have noted:
But to be honest, becoming the president in front of whom the efforts to curb Iran's nuclear program will bear fruit will bring more benefits to Biden and the Democrats before the 2024 election.
At the end of this article is:
Biden must seriously consider the costs of his inaction on Iran and find a way forward - otherwise we may find ourselves in the middle of a conflict that no one wanted.
