Tuesday, 10 May 2022 (YJC)_ Ecuador's interior minister says 43 prisoners were killed and 108 escaped during a prison riot.

43 killed during prison riot in EcuadorThe Ecuadorian government announced Monday evening that dozens of prisoners had been killed during riots and clashes between rival gangs at the Santo Domingo city jail.

Ecuador's Interior Minister Patricio Carillo told a news conference that 108 prisoners were still at large and 112 had been re-arrested.

According to Reuters, Ecuadorian authorities explained that the riot started after the transfer of one of the leaders of the criminal gangs to the "Blavista" prison in Santo Domingo following a court order and caused unrest among the prisoners.

According to the report, the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor General's Office of Ecuador reported the deaths of 43 prisoners, most of whom were stabbed to death.

The riot was the latest security incident in Ecuadorian prisons, which the government attributes to clashes between gangs over control of the territory and drug trafficking routes.

According to Reuters, 316 prisoners were killed last year during riots in various prisons across Ecuador.
