On February 21, President Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics, and three days later ordered a special military operation to support the residents of the Donbas region.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also said on Wednesday:
The return of Crimea to Russia, the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, are territorial realities that Ukraine and other countries must accept.

He made the remarks in an interview with a Spanish newspaper, adding:
The legitimate and wise choice of the people and the right of nations to self-determination under the UN Charter must be respected, according to which Crimea has returned to Russia and the two republics of Donetsk and Luhansk have become independent states.

"Dmitry Polyansky, the Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, said in a speech on Thursday morning:

He also added:
Finally, it is clear that the EU no longer has its own foreign policy or strategy. All it can do is bow to the United States when Washington whistles.
