Liu Xiaoming, the Chinese government's representative for the Korean Peninsula, said today (Monday) that Beijing was concerned about the tense situation in the region and that both the symptoms and the root cause of the tensions needed to be investigated.
Liu, who traveled to South Korea for talks this week, told a news conference at Seoul Airport:
The legitimate and rational concerns of all parties must be considered in order to reach a political solution.
According to Reuters, he stated in this regard:
We call on all parties to remain calm and restrained, and we do not approve of any action by any party that could escalate tensions.
On his first trip to South Korea since taking office in April 2021, Liu is scheduled to meet with his counterpart in Seoul on Tuesday.
Yonhap News Agency also wrote that he may also meet with representatives of South Korean President-elect Eun-suk-yul.
The Chinese representative for the Korean Peninsula stated:
The issues of the [Korean Peninsula] can be resolved politically, and China will continue to play a positive role. However, the key to resolving the issues is in the hands of North Korea and the United States.
Beijing has expressed concern about tensions on the Korean Peninsula as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un last week issued an order to further strengthen the country's military, saying its nuclear mission goes beyond deterrence.
