Friday, 15 April 2022 (YJC)_ The head of the US delegation, who visited Taiwan, met with the President and reiterated Washington's support for Taipei, describing the island's security as of global importance.
The US delegation, which traveled to Taiwan last night without heeding China's warning, met with President Tsai Ingun today (Friday).
In a meeting with Tsai, US Senator Bob Menendez, who heads a cross-party delegation, said that Taiwan is a "country of global importance" and that its security has consequences for the whole world.
According to Reuters, Menendez said at the meeting:
Given that Taiwan produces 90% of the world's advanced semiconductor products, it is a country of global significance, consequence and impact, and therefore it must be understood that Taiwan's security has a global impact.
He said the Chinese government was "very unhappy" with the US delegation's visit to Taiwan, but stressed that such an issue would not deter Washington from supporting Taiwan.
The delegation, which arrived in Taiwan from Australia on Thursday evening for an unannounced two-day visit, will meet with Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and Defense Minister Chiu Ko Cheng.
The Democratic senator earlier in February proposed a bill that would require Washington to negotiate a renaming of the Taiwanese embassy in Washington to a "Taiwanese representative office."
