Joe Biden's reaction to Russia's suspension of membership in the Human Rights CouncilUS President Joe Biden has issued a statement welcoming the UN General Assembly vote to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council.

The statement from the President of the United States of America reads:
I applaud the resolute vote in the UN General Assembly today to expel Russia from the Human Rights Council.

He also claimed that the vote was an important step by the international community to show how Russian President Vladimir Putin has turned Russia into a "despised country" at the international level.

The UN General Assembly on Thursday (April 7th) adopted a resolution calling for Russia's suspension of membership in the UN Human Rights Council.

93 countries agreed with this resolution, 24 countries voted against it and 54 countries abstained. Iran was one of the countries that opposed the resolution. Majid Takht-e Ravanchi, Iran's representative to the United Nations, called the draft resolution "political" at the UN meeting and said Iran would vote against it.

The United States on Monday demanded the suspension of Russia's membership in the Human Rights Council after accusing Russian troops of killing hundreds of civilians in the city of Bucha.

The suspension of a country's membership in the UN Human Rights Council is subject to the support of at least two-thirds of the members of the General Assembly for a resolution on the subject. The Human Rights Council was established in 2006 and has 47 members to date. Earlier, in 2011, Libya's membership in the council was suspended.
