US Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby said he was not fooled by the Kremlin's statements about reducing attacks on Kiev or withdrawing its forces.
Speaking at a Pentagon news conference, he added:
There are movements among Russian army units around Kiev, but these movements are aimed at re-establishing rather than retreating.
Kirby added:
Russia still retains a large part of its forces stationed around Kiev, and a small number of Russian troops withdrew from around Kiev to northern Ukraine.
He claimed:
Russia's rapid advance toward Kiev in the early days of the war indicates that the Ukrainian capital was Russia's main target.
A Pentagon spokesman said:
Russia has failed to achieve its goal of gaining control of Kiev, but the threat to the capital is not over.
Kirby added:
10 F-18 fighter jets and two transport aircraft will be flown from South Carolina to Eastern Europe, and 200 Marines will be stationed in Lithuania.
