Thursday, 24 March 2022 (YJC)_ The UN Security Council did not approve a draft Russian resolution on developments in Ukraine.
Members of the UN Security Council on Thursday morning rejected Russia's draft proposal on the Ukraine crisis.
According to Reuters, the draft called for the protection of civilians and guaranteed access to aid in Ukraine, but 13 countries abstained and 2 countries (China and Russia) voted in favor.
The Security Council requested that in addition to the International Atomic Energy Agency's ongoing inspections in Russia, that it monitor Russia's compliance with "the steps required by the IAEA Board".
Russia ordered a military strike on Ukraine on February 24. This development came days after Moscow formally recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics in eastern Ukraine.
Russia says Ukraine has not fulfilled its obligations under the Minsk agreements reached in 2014 and 2015 to resolve the dispute between separatists and Kiev. Vladimir Putin says Russia's military operation is aimed at "demilitarizing Ukraine" and "de-Naziizing" the country.
Hours after the Russian invasion, Ukraine announced that it had cut off all diplomatic ties with the country. Western nations have repeatedly imposed sanctions on Russia, including several of its banks, cut off Swift's messenger system.
The United States and its European allies have so far imposed extensive sanctions on Russia, listing most of its financial institutions, energy sector and political elite.
