The administration of US President Joe Biden intends to put a majority of members of the Russian Duma on the sanctions list under the pretext of Moscow's military operation in Ukraine.
The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday morning, citing unnamed officials, that new sanctions could be announced as early as Thursday. The sanctions are said to target up to 300 members of Russia's parliament.
U.S. officials have said the sanctions will be announced in coordination with the European Union and the Group of Seven, which includes the world's industrialized nations.
The announced sanctions against Russia have so far had no effect on convincing the president to stop Russian military operations in Ukraine. Accordingly, the Wall Street Journal writes that the effect of these sanctions on Russian lawmakers can not be predicted.
A U.S. official says sanctions packages may be adjusted or delayed during the intergovernmental review phase in the US government before they can be finalized.
The sanctions are being considered by the US government as Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its fourth week. The United States and its European allies have so far imposed extensive sanctions on Russia, listing most of its financial institutions, energy sector and political elite.
