Saturday, 12 March 2022 (YJC)_ The EU foreign policy chief acknowledged that Brussels had failed to deliver on promises it had failed to deliver on, including Ukraine's promise to join NATO.
EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell said in an interview with the French television channel Al-Isayyah that the West had made a mistake in promising Ukraine membership in NATO.
Borrell said:
There are moments when we could have reacted better. For example, we offered things that we could not guarantee, especially Ukraine's membership in NATO. This never happened. I think it was a mistake to make promises that we could not keep.
The head of European diplomacy also admitted that the West had made mistakes in establishing relations with Russia. He said:
So we missed the opportunity to bring Russia closer to the West to stop it.
In an interview with France Info on Thursday, the EU foreign policy chief also spoke about issues such as the current state of the bloc's relations with Russia over the Ukraine crisis and Western pressure on sanctions.
Joseph Borrell acknowledged that the European Union had done all it could to impose sanctions on Russia and could not do more.
The senior Brussels official told French media:
Of course, in the case of financial sanctions, you can always go further, but we have now reached a point where we can no longer continue. We did everything we could.
