While some countries have refused to comply with US sanctions against Russia or have said they are considering imposing sanctions on the energy sector, it is now being said that Washington may act alone to impose sanctions on oil imports from Russia.
Two informed sources told Reuters that the United States wanted to ban Russian oil imports without the participation of its European allies, given Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden made a video call to the leaders of France, Germany and Britain on Monday, saying his administration was still seeking their support for a ban on Russian oil imports.
Reuters quoted a source who did not want to be named as saying on Tuesday morning:
The White House is in talks with congressional leaders on rapid legislation banning Russian oil imports, a move that would force the government to work on a timetable.
A senior US official also told Reuters that no final decision had been made, but that if that happened, Washington would probably be alone.
