The statement, a copy of which was posted on Iraq's Al-Masla news website, said:
The tragic incident that took place during the Friday prayers in this mosque, which led to the martyrdom of a number of innocent worshipers and the injury of many of them, is unfortunate and heartbreaking.
Expressing solidarity with the families of the victims, Ayatollah Sistani's office wished great mercy to the martyrs and urgent healing to the injured:
The Najaf seminary and the high-ranking Iraqi Shiite authority strongly condemn this heinous crime that targets the unity of Muslims.
The following is the statement:
The Najaf seminary and the supreme authority of the Iraqi Shiites call on the Pakistani government to confront the injustices and crimes of terrorist groups in support of the defenseless people and to take the necessary preventive measures in this regard. And not to allow religious communities to be exposed to such violent and brutal attacks by extremist savage groups.
