International news sources reported Sunday morning that North Korea had fired a new missile of unknown type into the Sea of Japan.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted the chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as saying that the projectile was fired Sunday morning.
The Japanese Coast Guard also said in a statement that the missile was intended to be a ballistic missile.
If Japan's assessment is confirmed, this is the eighth time since the beginning of this year that North Korea has fired ballistic missiles.
North Korea's new move comes shortly after a Chinese president promised Pyongyang that it would increase "friendship and cooperation" with that country under "new circumstances."
China is North Korea's largest trading partner, and some estimates suggest that 90% of North Korea's trade volume is with China.
