On Thursday, the first day of a Russian military operation in Ukraine, Russian officials announced that the Russian military had taken control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinsky claimed that Russian forces were trying to take control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. He tweeted:
Russian occupying forces are trying to seize Chernobyl. Our defenders are sacrificing their lives to prevent a repeat of the 1986 tragedy. This is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe.
The Russian Defense Ministry also said in a statement about the operation in Ukraine:
The Russian military has destroyed 18 Ukrainian tanks, seven rocket launchers and 41 other military vehicles.
Russia ordered a military strike on Ukraine on Thursday morning (February 24th). This development came days after Moscow formally recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics in eastern Ukraine. Russia says Ukraine has not fulfilled its obligations under the Minsk agreements reached in 2014 and 2015 to resolve the dispute between separatists and Kiev.
