US Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby on Thursday morning reiterated allegations of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
"A press conference at the Pentagon said:
Russia continues to increase its forces near the border with Ukraine, and only [Vladimir] Putin [President of Russia] is aware of the time of the attack.
According to American media, he continued:
If Putin chooses war, he will have to bear the consequences of the casualties, including Russian soldiers. If Putin wants to go to war, it is difficult to predict what will happen.
Asked about Russia's military support for the two self-proclaimed republics in eastern Ukraine, a Pentagon spokesman said:
We believe that Russian forces are moving more towards Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Kirby added:
The US-Russian military communication channels will remain open and we see no reason to close them in the midst of escalating tensions over Ukraine.
He also spoke about the US reaction in the event of a possible Russian attack on Ukraine:
As President Joe Biden noted in his remarks yesterday, Secretary of Defense [Lloyd Austin] ordered the deployment of more US troops currently stationed in Europe to continue our support for NATO allies and the defense of the eastern flank.
