Saturday, 19 February 2022 (YJC)_ Canadian police arrested 70 protesters in downtown Ottawa on Friday.
Canadian police said Friday they had arrested at least 70 people for clearing a road blocked by protesters in central Ottawa for the past three weeks.
According to the Associated Press, hundreds of policemen attacked the center of the city on Friday morning and began detention of protesters and transferring them to the detention center.
Trucks opposed to restrictions on the corona outbreak in Canada have blocked roads in the city center for about three weeks. The movement sparked anti-government protests in other countries and temporarily closed US-Canadian border crossings.
Threats of fines and imprisonment have prompted protesters to withdraw from four border crossings with the United States this week. Police in Ottawa have made similar threats.
Ottawa Interim Police Chief Steve Bell said police were committed to evacuating protesters from the city center. He said:
We have strengthened our resources, made the necessary plans and are ready to take action. Our action is imminent.
