Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem condemned Australia's move to call the movement a terrorist, saying it was a clear support for the occupying regime and encouraging it to continue its aggression against the Palestinian people.
According to Al-Aqsa, he said, "Australia's move is in conflict with all international laws and charters that protect the right of the Palestinian people to resist the occupiers;" Hamas is a national liberation movement that is fighting the occupier in accordance with international law.
Hazem Qasim clarified:
The one who should be called a terrorist is the occupying regime, which targets the Palestinians everywhere and violates international and humanitarian laws and charters.
Australia on Thursday (today) announced that the country has recognized the entire Hamas movement as a terrorist organization, AFP reported today (Thursday). Australia has previously called Hamas' military wing a terrorist organization.
Explaining why the move was made, Australian Interior Minister Karen Andrew claimed:
The views of Hamas and the violent extremist groups listed today as (terrorist) are very disturbing and there is no room in Australia for their hateful ideologies.
