Iranian and Iraqi officials have said talks between Tehran and Riyadh will be held in the near future and will be hosted by Baghdad.
An Iraqi security source told the Qatari newspaper Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed about the fifth round of talks:
A number of security officials will be present in the delegations of the two countries, and talks will take place inside the Green Zone in the capital [Iraq]. As in previous periods, these negotiations will not be exposed until before.
The security source, whom the Qatari newspaper described as an informed source in a report today (Tuesday), said that the postponement of the meeting in the past was not due to Iraqi issues, but due to the delay in holding the meeting between the two sides. The unnamed security source denied reports that the Tehran-Baghdad talks were delayed due to the Iraqi political crisis and security unrest.
According to the source, "Iraq is more waiting for the progress of the Saudi-Iranian dialogue and reaching the level of ministers, so that cases related to it and related to the two countries can be raised in it." However, the source said that due to "distrust between the two sides" it is still too early to talk about this stage.
So far, four rounds of talks have taken place between Tehran and Riyadh, and according to Iraj Masjidi, the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Baghdad, good progress has been made in these talks. The Iranian ambassador announced earlier this month that a fifth round of talks would be held soon.
