The South Korean military says North Korea fired an unidentified rocket at local time on Monday morning.
This is North Korea's seventh missile test in two weeks.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean military has announced that North Korea has launched the projectile, the coordinates of which are not yet known, into the Sea of Japan. In response to the test, the Japanese government said Pyongyang may have tested a ballistic missile.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said it had identified the missile launch in Jagang Province, near the Chinese border with North Korea. This is the region where North Korea tested its supersonic missiles in September 2021 and January 2022.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in also called for a meeting of the National Security Council.
If approved, it would be North Korea's seventh missile test in a month; This is more than all the missile tests in the country in 2021.
North Korea said Wednesday it had tested two long-range, tactical surface-to-air cruise missiles, and that its leader had visited the weapons factory.
Following the missile test on Wednesday, a spokesman for the EU foreign policy chief called on North Korea to end its missile tests and return to talks on nuclear disarmament on the Korean Peninsula.
