Saturday, 29 January 2022 (YJC)_ The Chinese ambassador to Washington issued a stern warning to the United States in support of Taiwan's independence, saying that continuing such a policy could lead to military conflict with the country.
Beijing's ambassador to Washington, Qing Gang, described the Taiwan issue as the most important dangerous situation between China and the United States that could lead to violence.
Gang said in a radio interview on Friday that if the United States continued to support Taiwan's independence, it could lead to a military confrontation between Washington and Beijing.
According to Reuters, quoting the interview, he explained:
Let me emphasize this. The Taiwan issue is the biggest dangerous situation between China and the United States.
The Chinese diplomat stated:
If Taiwanese officials, emboldened by the United States, continue to pursue independence, they will likely engage China and the United States in a military confrontation.
Asked by Reuters to comment on the Chinese ambassador's remarks, the Pentagon said Washington was committed to the "one China" policy and its obligations under the Taiwan Relations Act.
Under this long-standing policy, Washington formally recognizes Beijing over Taipei, while the law requires the United States to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself.
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Taiwan was part of the country, warning that supporting separatists in Taiwan would come at an unbearable cost to the United States.
