Saturday, 29 January 2022 (YJC)_ Informed sources say Seoul and Tehran officials are planning a working meeting next month to discuss Iran's frozen assets in South Korean banks.
Following a meeting between the Iranian and South Korean deputy foreign ministers in Austria and talks on Tehran's blocked assets in Seoul banks, some sources are now reporting that talks between the two sides will continue.
Informed sources told Yonhap News Agency that Seoul and Tehran officials are planning to hold a working meeting next month to discuss Iran's frozen assets in South Korean banks.
"His name and position were not disclosed," Yonhap was quoted as saying.
South Korea and Iran plan to hold working-level consultations in Seoul next month to discuss ways to resolve years-long disputes over Tehran-frozen assets in the US-sanctioned country.
According to the report, Seoul officials say the proposed working groups are set to look into the details of a possible transfer of money after sanctions on Iran were lifted, and to discuss other aspects if no agreement is reached.
The source further explained to Yonhap:
The working groups are expected to focus mainly on the details of how Iran's assets will be repaid if sanctions are lifted by the United States. They may also discuss the possibility of resuming oil imports from Iran after the lifting of sanctions.
South Korea's debt to Iran in exchange for the purchase of gas condensate in the two banks of this country is worth a total of seven billion dollars, which has not been paid since September 2018 under the pretext of US sanctions.
