Friday, 28 January 2022 (YJC)_ Stressing that Moscow does not want a war with Ukraine, the Russian foreign minister said that Vladimir Putin would decide on the West's response to Moscow's proposals.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today (Friday) in an interview with the country's four main radio stations that if it were to Russia, there would be no war; Moscow does not want a war.
According to Sputnik, Lavrov stressed, however, that Moscow would not allow the West to ignore its interests. The senior Russian diplomat said he expected talks with NATO and the United States on security guarantees were not over and expected to meet with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in the next few weeks. He added that US proposals were better than those received from NATO.
Lavrov also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin would decide how to respond to the proposals. In another part of his speech, he stressed that Russia is expanding its relations with Latin America independently of security negotiations with the West.
In response to Washington's threat of a new sanctions package against Moscow, as well as the imposition of sanctions on senior Russian officials, the Russian foreign minister called such a move tantamount to severing US-Russian relations.
He explained:
As for the threat of sanctions, the Americans were told, including at the level of contacts between the presidents, that the package, which is accompanied by a complete severance of Western-controlled financial and economic systems, would be tantamount to severing ties.
Lavrov noted that the West is well aware that imposing sanctions is not in anyone's interests.
