Thursday, 27 January 2022 (YJC)_ Referring to the current situation in Afghanistan, the UN Secretary-General said that more than half of the Afghan people are facing severe hunger, especially this winter.
According to the regional office of Tasnim news agency, "UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres" said that Afghanistan is facing the worst drought in the last two decades and more than half of the people of this country are facing severe hunger.
Without mentioning the two decades of foreign presence and occupation of Afghanistan by the United States and its allies, he stressed that at least 9 million people in Afghanistan are on the brink of famine. If the people in this country are not helped, the world will pay a heavy price.
Guterres added:
More than 80 percent of Afghanistan's population is dependent on contaminated drinking water. Afghanistan is facing the worst drought in two decades and 9 million people are on the brink of starvation. The lives of the people of this country are in serious danger in the current situation and in the very cold winter.
The UN Secretary-General said:
I welcome the approval of the Security Council's humanitarian waiver of the UN sanctions system against Afghanistan. In addition to the Afghan economy, we must suspend conditions that limit life-saving operations, so international financial assistance must be allowed to pay the salaries of Afghan public sector employees.
