Monday, 24 January 2022 (YJC)_ Rejecting Ukraine's request for sanctions against Russia in the current situation, the US Secretary of State stressed that Moscow's sanctions in this situation will destroy its deterrent power.

The United States has rejected Ukraine's request for sanctions against RussiaUS Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has rejected calls for sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis, saying Moscow's sanctions would weaken Western deterrence in the current context to prevent a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The build-up of Russian troops near Ukraine's borders has raised concerns in the West about Moscow's intention to take military action against Ukraine, something Russia has called an illusion of Europe and the United States and their efforts to spread Russophobia.

The US Secretary of State, who was interviewed by CNN, added:
When it comes to sanctions, the goal is to deter military action. And if the trigger is lifted now, we will lose its deterrent effect.

In a recent interview with the Washington Post, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinsky backed the current imposition of sanctions on Russia, a move backed by Republican lawmakers in the US Congress.

Blinken added:
If even one Russian military enters Ukraine aggressively, as I said, this Russian action will be accompanied by a strong, rapid and integrated response from us and Europe.
