Saturday, 22 January 2022 (YJC)_ As the crackdown on Tunisian protesters intensified, the UN Secretary-General expressed grave concern about the situation in Tunisia.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over developments in Tunisia following the ouster of former Prime Minister Qais Saeed and the suspension of parliament.
"The Tunisian democratic revolution has revived hope in the hearts of the world, and we emphasize that democratic values must be preserved," Guterres told a news conference.
He added:
We hope that this will happen, we see these concerns, and we hope that these concerns will be addressed through the full restoration of the democratic framework of the institutions that work for the benefit of all Tunisians.
According to the Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed website, the warning comes as Tunisia continues to stage protests against the president's actions, and on Friday, police in an unprecedented move used water cannons, tear gas and batons to disperse protesters. The anniversary of the 2011 revolution was suppressed and dozens arrested.
On the other hand, Mohammad al-Qumani, one of the leaders of the Ennahda movement, said that security forces raided the house of Ahmad al-Jalali, an official of the movement in the city of al-Raqab, and took him away to an unknown location.
