Thursday, 13 January 2022 (YJC)_ A bill was unveiled in the US Senate, according to which Washington must take all necessary measures to prevent the operation of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, including sanctions against senior Russian officials.
Democrats in the US Senate on Wednesday evening unveiled a plan to impose extensive sanctions on senior Russian government and military officials, including President Vladimir Putin and key banking institutions, in the event of Moscow launching new hostilities against Ukraine.
The proposed law, which is also backed by the White House, includes provisions to help strengthen Ukraine's security and encourages the United States to "consider all available and appropriate measures" to prevent the operation of a Russian-German gas pipeline called the North Stream 2.
"Senator Robert Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who unveiled the bill, said in a statement," according to Reuters.
The law makes it very clear that the US Senate will not be idle because the Kremlin is threatening to invade Ukraine again.
The bill, first published by the Washington Post, also targets companies in Russia that offer secure messaging systems, such as Swift, that banks use to exchange key information with other financial institutions.
