The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a church in the northern Haitian city of Gunaway.

Local sources said that after Ariel Henry left the temple where the celebration was being held, several shots were fired by unknown individuals nearby, and his bodyguards immediately evacuated the prime minister to safety.

According to local sources, at least one person was killed and several others were injured in the exchange of fire, and some celebrations were canceled.

Last December, Haitian armed groups warned the prime minister not to attend official ceremonies.

Political unrest in Haiti escalated with the assassination of the president's home last July, and UN agencies are reporting a deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the country since the assassination.
