Speaking at the Labor Party's political congress, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for improving the economic situation of the people, strengthening their military capabilities and continuing measures to combat the coronavirus.
"The economic situation is a national priority," Kim said.
Increasing the development and improving the living standards of the people will be the main task of the government of this country.
According to the Hurriyet newspaper, quoting North Korean media, Kim Jong Un did not mention any interaction with the United States and South Korea in his speech. Some experts say the North Korean leader's move means he has no immediate desire to resume talks with Washington and Seoul.
According to the official North Korean news agency, Kim continued his speech by saying that the growing instability of the military environment on the Korean Peninsula, as well as international policy, necessitates the development of defense programs without delay.
Kim Jong Un has also issued four tactical instructions on the country's foreign relations, including with South Korea, but did not provide details.
The five-day meeting of the North Korean Workers' Party Central Committee coincides with the tenth anniversary of Kim Jong Un's rise to power.
